"I love this place. The prime rib and baked potato is sooooo good. Good horseradish too."
I tried this place cause- a friend told me it was good. The crab cakes were sour. The chicken noodle soup was salty. The coke came late. The burger was bland and the salad was warm. Have to say that the service sucked. They took forever getting me the bill.
I ordered the cessna sandwich. A very tasty turkey sandwich on 7-grain wheat bread with lettuce, tomato, daikon sprouts and mustard spread. Now, only if they offered a ride on a cessna at the nearby Santa Monica airport, that would RULE!

Great place for breakfast. They have an egg white omelette that is fantastic, with tomatoes, and goat cheese, and not to mention, a tasty bloody mary.
Waffles are pretty fantastic too, and the sides of fruit, your berries and bananas and whatnot: always fresh, firm, alive looking.
And the service is always on top of things.

I agree with Joe Escalante! And Sara Beth and Robin. I don't get the low ratings at all. I actually like this place! You can sit outside in the patio and enjoy the sunshine and watch the planes and helicopters taking off and landing at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport or you can sit inside if you so please, but I don't advise it. I made that mistake once and ended up sitting at the bar next to a employee who wasn't on duty so she just kept yapping away and it was annoying because she was super loud and bombastic and all I wanted to do was read my Economist! Sit outside, trust me!
With prices ranging from about $7-$12 a plate I have no idea how some of these reviewers can call this place expensive. Where do you usually eat Taco Bell? I thought the prices were fair considering you're getting generous portions, quality ingredients and solid food. Here's another little useful factoid.... you can use your KCRW Fringe Benefits card and get 20% off your bill ORRRRR Since in addition to great food they also have a full bar you can come during Happy Hour (which if I'm not mistaken is from 5-7pm) and enjoy the discounted food and drink specials.
I always have trouble deciding what to order here because the daily specials always sound delicious as does every single other thing on the menu!

I'm glad I wasn't scared off by these reviews. Service was great. Waiter hustled to make our meal a great experience. I ordered the Carne Asada and it was absolutely delicious and authentic. The fetching Mrs. Escalantova ordered a burger and sweet potato fries and she LOVED it all. The diet Coke was perfect, which doesn't always happen when they bring it from a bar.
The location is a lot of fun and the prices are about where they should be for this kind of experience. And if it keeps out the one star giving riff raff, so much the better; can't wait to go back.

I can only say this is "middle of the road." I've been here twice and each time I've left I sort of wonder why I went. I will say though, that their onion rings and their Champagne Vinaigrette are FANTASTIC. Sandwiches are hit or miss. Last time we ate there (I apologize up front if this offends anyone) my fiance said that my sandwich tasted "like farts." And, sadly, it sort of did. I would say if you go, order a salad and a side of onion rings and don't go out of your way to get here.

Bad food high prices. Really, I've had better food at ihop. How the hell do they justify the prices for this food. $16 for carne asada soft tacos that you have to put together yourself? HELL NO.
Never again. everververever
I use to go all the time for breakfast had lunch there and I am on a specific diet for health reasons so no sauses of any sort, the waitress knew all about a glueten free diet and told me of all there dressings for my salad,
all food and sauces are all made in house except ketchup and mustard
yummmy
I now go with my friends to the new dog park across the road and the bar at spitfire is our new fav every day a $15 botlle wine special and app. of aspparigus with brioche and I'm set, PS you can take the extra wine home if you don't finish it:-)
service is the best

not so good. I'm always disappointed here! Nice view of Santa Monica Airport and nice patio but that's it. Overpriced and bland combined with slow service. Needs new management! This place could be amazing with it's location, parking, ambiance. I have never been happy with my food here and I've been here many times over the years. I stopped going in '2005 so maybe it's changed since then. I hope so for their sake.
Huh? 2 star average? NO WAY, people. I just had the tastiest salad of possibly ever for a damn good price.
First off, it's a glorious July day and we're sitting outside, gazing out at little hangar planes and the santa monica soccer campers tearing up astroturf. Quintessential Los Angeles summer lunch.
Secondly- everything on the menu looked good. Breakfast all day, salads, gourmet sandwiches, lunch plates- I could've closed my eyes and randomly plunked my finger down and I'd happily eat whatever it landed on.
I got a salad with citrus-marinated flank steak, roma tomatoes, artichoke hearts, cucumbers, and tortilla strips over baby greens. The "house champagne vinagrette" was SENSATIONAL, with its dijion base and sweet, peppery tang. Especially perfect with the ingredients of my salad. The steak was medium rare, hot off the grill, and seasoned marvelously. Reminded me how much I adore a marinated londion broil. Seriously yummy. Not a salad that will make you envious of the person who ordered the burger and fries. And priced well at $10.95.
The folks I was with ordered A) turkey melt sandwich with homemade potato chips B) chinese chicken salad and C) "early flight" breakfast special. Everyone was enthusiastic about their food. Chinese Chicken Salad Chick said she liked it so much she'd never order anything else. That's how I felt about my steak salad!
One star off because service was kinda lacking- slow and no check-back on our food.

I have only had lunch at the Spitfire and it was solid. The ahi salad was phenomenal. Kinda a cool place to have lunch - an airport? Not really in an airport but technically in the Santa Monica Airport. If your in the area I recommend it!

My wife and I went there last night for the first time. We were told immediately that they were understaffed and it might take a while, which I respected. The ambiance of the place is rather nice, with a bar-type setting on the right and a more business-like environment on the left. It took about 10 minutes for the drinks to arrive after reminding 3 different staff members. The complimentary Parmesan bread with artichoke/garlic dip was wicked and delicious.
We ordered mushroom ravioli, grilled salmon with goat cheese and spinach stuffing, as well as 2 mixed greens side salads and garlic fries. While the salad dressing was exceptional, all other dishes were very average and nothing special at all. The salmon was filled with an overwhelming amount of goat cheese and was almost inedible. The garlic fries were ok, but nothing special either.
We both agreed that we might go back one day again and have one of their entree salads, simply because the dressing (balsamic base with garlic, mushroom and maybe a bit of honey) was so incredibly delicious. I believe that for the same money you can find much better restaurants.
i'm so sick and tired of being sick and tired of bland $10 burgers. is it that hard to toss some salt on it while it's cooking? maybe a little pepper?
the only thing this burger had going for it was the bacon, which was good. but then if you cant cook bacon, then i don't know. this burger weighed heavily on my soul. depressing me. is this what the world has come to? ugh.
outside the place looked run down. far too shabby for the richers that live in these parts. inside was meh. airplane stuff everywhere. i can't believe we almost had our christmas party there.

slow service, but good quality food, great location, great view, and awesome patio. always came here while waiting for the bus to SMC.
This place is a little sub par. The food was bleh. I got a Alaskan king crab omelet and it was so salty and fishy tasting. I might as well have ordered the Chum omelet instead. The service was slow, I had to go get the waitress twice for drink refills. Oh and a bee attacked me, an omen I ignored.
It has a good patio, especially during summer months and plenty of free parking.
Cool name, not so great restaurant.

Great patio! Average food and less than average service. Great place for a hangover morning. They do have veggie breakfast sausage, though!

once again i'm wisihing i could post a 1/2 star for this joint. 3 1/2 stars. but i give it four because of how swanky it looked inside.
had breakfast there this morning. huevos rancheros and whole wheat pancakes. not bad. actually, it was pretty average. not as greasy as your typical breakfast diner, but the taste was very average. however, i am assuming their lunch and dinner may be better than my experience this morning. they are offering a "summer sangria" which sounds yum. i'll have to check it out sometime.
the food is palatable. but definitely over-priced. if you have no other creative ideas and want something that won't make you sick, go here. the food really isn't bad, it's just not exemplary. you definitely pay too much for what you are getting.
